Fraser is a nearly square city of 4.16 square miles in southern Macomb County, about 15 miles northeast of downtown Detroit. The city grew out of a German farming crossroads on the old Utica Plank Road, and it takes its name from Alexander J. Frazer, a Detroit lawyer who arrived in the late 1850s. Most of the city filled in during the 1950s, when the population climbed from 1,379 people to 7,027 in ten years. The Fraser Historical Commission preserves the old Grand Trunk depot at Masonic and Kelly Road, plus the Hemme Barn on the grounds of the 1875 Baumgartner House, which the city runs as a museum.
